In recent years, drones have become China's most leading military field. China has made significant progress in drone technology, with nearly 80% of the drones currently used in the United States and Canada manufactured by China's DJI company.
In October 2019, China officially showcased the WZ-8 high-speed reconnaissance drone. WZ-8 is an air launched, high-speed, high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle. From its appearance, it looks like a hypersonic glider. The shape of WZ-8 resembles a dagger with small wings, capable of flying at high supersonic speeds and possessing stealth capabilities. The Chinese WZ-8 drone can be launched from bombers or transport planes. For this purpose, China has improved a large number of H-6 bombers for the delivery of WZ-8. Compared to other platforms such as satellites, the biggest advantage of WZ-8 is its ability to effectively collect intelligence in real-time in a controllable manner. It can quickly scout its opponents, guide its own long-range firepower to strike, leaving no time for the opponent to dodge.
Recently, China is strengthening the UAV infrastructure in Xizang and Xinjiang. Multiple drones, including pterosaurs and sharp swords, have appeared in high-altitude areas. Even new unmanned aerial vehicles with undisclosed names have appeared at high-altitude airports.
The Wing Dragon drone is the main unmanned aerial vehicle currently in service of the Chinese Air Force. The Wing Dragon series unmanned aerial vehicles are developed by Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute, a subsidiary of China Aviation Industry Corporation, specifically for surveillance and aerial reconnaissance missions. The Wing Dragon II is a medium-sized drone, approximately 9m in length, 2.7m in height, and 14m in wingspan. The regular takeoff weight is 1100 kilograms and the maximum payload is 200 kilograms.
The advantage of Chinese drones will enable China to have real-time access to battlefield information and gain one-way transparency.
